Balcony Solar in Germany: What Can You Legally Install and Register in 2026?

How many watts can a German balcony solar system feed in, which plug is allowed, and what does registration in the Marktstammdatenregister require? The 2026 rules explained.

Germany is the largest and most mature market for plug-in balcony solar in Europe, and its rulebook has been through two rounds of simplification in quick succession. If you source kits for German customers — or advise them — the 2026 framework is now refreshingly concrete: one power limit, one recognised product standard, one registration portal. Here is what the rules actually say.

The 800 VA feed-in limit — and what it does not limit

The number everyone quotes is 800 VA of inverter AC output. Introduced with the federal Solar Package I legislation and carried into the current framework, this is the hard ceiling on how much power a plug-in solar device may feed into the household circuit. The inverter enforces it automatically.

The common misunderstanding is that this caps the whole system. It does not. The module capacity may be substantially higher — up to 2,000 Wp of panels feeding an 800 VA inverter is a fully legal configuration. Extra module capacity does not raise the feed-in ceiling; it raises yield in the low-light, low-sun conditions where German balconies spend most of the year. For distributors, this distinction defines the product: size the array to the ceiling, not below it.

One registration instead of two notifications

Before the reform, an operator had to register the system and separately notify the local grid operator — two bureaucracies, two chances to get it wrong. That is gone. Today the only obligation is a one-time, free online registration in the Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR) run by the Bundesnetzagentur, Germany's Federal Network Agency. The data — operator, location, module and inverter output, commissioning date — is transmitted to the grid operator automatically.

The registration must be completed within one month of commissioning. Skipping it is not a technicality: it breaches the register act, can void grid-protection claims and complicates the mandatory meter exchange. Operators of older Ferraris meters should also know the sequence — after registration, the metering point operator has up to four months to swap in a bidirectional meter at no charge.

Rule2026 status in Germany
Feed-in (inverter AC output)Max. 800 VA — enforced by the inverter
Module capacityUp to 2,000 Wp permitted; more capacity means more low-light yield, not more feed-in
ConnectionStandard household plug recognised under the VDE pre-standard; a dedicated feed-in socket installed by an electrician remains optional
RegistrationOne-time, free entry in the Marktstammdatenregister within one month of commissioning; separate grid-operator notification abolished
Tenants & flat ownersPrivileged structural change since October 2024 — landlords and owners' associations may not refuse unreasonably
VATZero rate for typical private photovoltaic systems, including plug-in devices

Which plug is allowed?

The plug question was the longest-running grey area in the category. Since December 2025, the VDE pre-standard DIN VDE V 0126-95 has formalised it: connection through a standard household plug is recognised for plug-in solar devices within the defined limits — up to 960 Wp of module capacity on the household-plug route. Systems with more module capacity, up to the full 2,000 Wp, connect through a dedicated feed-in socket installed by a specialist contractor. The feed-in limit stays 800 VA in both cases.

For product people, one detail in the standard matters more than the plug itself: the requirements apply to the complete system as sold, and inverters whose output can be raised above the limit in software no longer qualify for new installations. A kit configured to the legal ceiling out of the box avoids the argument entirely.

Key takeaways

  • 800 VA is the feed-in ceiling; up to 2,000 Wp of modules is legal behind it.
  • Only MaStR registration is required — grid-operator notification is gone.
  • Household-plug connection is now formally recognised under the VDE pre-standard.
  • Software-unlockable over-limit inverters are out; the tested configuration is the sellable configuration.

What it means for buyers and importers

Germany's rules reward products that are designed compliant rather than configured compliant. The checklist for any kit destined for the German market is short: native 800 VA inverter output with no software path above it, a system-level conformity assessment against the VDE pre-standard, grid-settings documentation in German, and registration instructions in the box that walk the customer through the MaStR entry step by step. Because more than half of German households rent, the tenant-rights angle is the demand engine — and the market overwhelmingly favours kits that ship with a landlord-friendly, fully reversible mounting concept already thought through.

Frequently asked questions

Can my solar panels be more powerful than 800 watts in Germany?

Yes. The 800 VA limit applies to the inverter's AC feed-in output, not to the module capacity. A system may carry up to 2,000 Wp of modules; the extra capacity simply raises yield in low light while the feed-in stays capped at 800 VA.

Do I still have to notify the local grid operator in Germany?

No. Since the Solar Package I reforms, the separate notification to the grid operator has been abolished. The only obligation is a one-time, free registration in the Bundesnetzagentur's Marktstammdatenregister, and the data is forwarded to the grid operator automatically.

Is a normal household socket allowed for balcony solar in Germany?

Yes. Under the VDE application rule DIN VDE V 0126-95, connection through a standard household plug is formally recognised for systems within the defined module and feed-in limits. A dedicated feed-in socket installed by an electrician remains optional and allows higher module capacity.

Can my landlord stop me from installing a balcony solar system?

Since October 2024, plug-in solar devices are a privileged structural change under German civil law: landlords and owners' associations may not refuse unreasonably, but they can set conditions on mounting and cable routing, and the formal consent procedure must still be followed.
