LiFePO4 Home Batteries: Cycle Life, Depth of Discharge and Real-World Lifespan

Why lithium iron phosphate became the default chemistry for home storage — and how depth of discharge, temperature and BMS quality decide how long your battery actually lasts.

Almost every serious home battery sold today is lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4, or LFP). The chemistry is not the most energy-dense available, and that is precisely the point: it trades a little compactness for thermal stability and long cycle life — the two properties that matter most when a battery sits on a wall for fifteen years.

What "cycle life" really means

A cycle is one full charge and discharge — but nobody lives at 100% to 0%. Manufacturers rate cycle life to a depth of discharge (DOD) and an end-of-life capacity, usually "6,000 cycles at 80% DOD to 70% remaining capacity". Three numbers, one promise. Compare batteries by holding all three constant; a "10,000-cycle" claim at 50% DOD may be worse than a 6,000-cycle claim at 80%.

Depth of dischargeDeeper cycling wears the cell fasterSet 80–90% DOD for daily cycling; keep 100% for rare backup events
TemperatureHeat accelerates ageing; charging below 0°C risks lithium platingInstall in a ventilated space; look for a BMS with low-temperature charge lockout

Why the BMS matters as much as the cells

The battery management system is the part that keeps 15 series cells balanced, enforces temperature limits, and refuses unsafe charge requests. In practice, two batteries with identical cells can age very differently depending on BMS logic: how aggressively it balances, whether it derates at temperature extremes, and how it communicates with the inverter. When comparing suppliers, ask for the communication protocol (CAN/RS485), the inverter compatibility list, and whether firmware updates are supported — not just the cell brand.

Reading a spec sheet in 60 seconds

  • Usable capacity, not nominal — usable = nominal × DOD limit.
  • Cycle life with its DOD and end-of-life percentage.
  • Continuous and peak discharge current, at what temperature.
  • Warranty years and throughput (kWh) — the binding one usually applies.
  • Certifications: IEC 62619 / UL 1973 for cells and packs, UN 38.3 for transport.

Safety, plainly stated

LFP's olivine crystal structure releases very little oxygen when abused, so thermal events are rarer and less energetic than with higher-nickel chemistries. It is the reason LFP dominates stationary storage. That does not remove the need for correct installation: clearance, non-flammable mounting surfaces, correct torque on terminals and a properly sized breaker remain the installer's responsibility — chemistry is a safety margin, not a substitute for workmanship.

Getting 15 years out of a 10-year battery

Field experience across fleet data points to boring habits: avoid chronic 100% charging, keep the unit out of direct sun, ensure airflow around the enclosure, and let the BMS do a full balancing cycle occasionally rather than constantly micro-cycling. Battery systems that follow these rules routinely outlive their warranty by a wide margin.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use 100% of my battery's capacity?

Technically yes, but cycling to 100% DOD every day ages the cells much faster. Most systems let you set a usable window — 80–90% DOS is the sweet spot for daily operation.

Is LiFePO4 safe to install indoors?

LFP is among the most thermally stable lithium chemistries and is widely installed indoors. Still follow the installation manual: clearances, mounting surface, ventilation and correct protection devices.

What happens in winter?

Discharge works fine in the cold, but charging below 0°C can permanently damage lithium cells. Choose a battery whose BMS blocks low-temperature charging or includes heating.

Do I need the same brand battery as my inverter?

Not necessarily, but the inverter must support your battery's communication protocol (CAN/RS485) and be on its compatibility list — otherwise charging parameters may be generic instead of optimised.
